About the changes to the GradCertIA

IIA-Australia has decided to take a new approach to the learning products we offer the profession. This is based on changes to the nature of the role, needs of those hiring staff and evolving expectations of learners.

Our new strategy is competency and career based. An important shift required to achieve this is adjusting the learning offered in the GradCertIA to be more flexible and adaptive to the rapid pace of change the profession is experiencing, as well as setting people up to attain the Certified Internal Auditor® (CIA®) status.

It was not an easy decision, but rather than continue the high-cost burden of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) regulation, we are investing in professional development that will better support the profession as a whole.

The soon to be released Professional Certificate and our existing suit of micro-credentials provide alternative pathways to gain professionally relevant career specific learning opportunities. We would be happy to assist you with a competency to career aspiration assessment and discuss

The new non-award Professional Certificate will offer a more flexible and scalable learning model that is better aligned to the Institute of Internal Auditors–Australia’s Competency Framework and mapped to career outcomes.

More details will be released soon.

A teach out is a structured process that allows currently enrolled students to complete their course of study after the program has been formally discontinued and closed to new enrolments. You will be supported to finish your studies within a specified timeframe.

No major changes will be made to the program structure or content during the teach-out period. All academic standards, assessment criteria, and grading policies remain unchanged during the teach-out period. The integrity and quality of the qualification will be upheld throughout.

Yes. The Graduate Certificate in Internal Auditing (GradCertIA) will remain a formally recognised award. Your graduation eligibility, award title, and academic transcript will reflect the full value and quality of your learning.

Yes. Graduates of the GradCertIA still automatically qualify for Professional Membership of IIA-Australia.

For GradCertIA Students

Yes. If you are a current registered student, you are eligible to complete the program under the teach out plan, provided you have time on your 5 year candidature, maintain satisfactory academic progress and enrol in required units as scheduled.

1 module remaining: With one module remaining you should be able to complete the course this year.

2 modules remaining: With two modules left you should be able to complete the course mid 2026.

3 modules remaining: To complete the program you will need to undertake and pass one module per semester for the next three semesters, finishing by 18 December 2026. You can apply to do modules 2 and 3 concurrently. Please note that with 3 subjects remaining a deferral or a failed module may result in you not being able to complete the program in time.

4 modules remaining: There is a pathway to support you complete the program. Please contact us to find out more.

To give everyone the best chance of success, for the teach-out period supplementary assessments will be available where a person fails a module's assessment.

If you would prefer to take more time, you can switch to the professional certificate. Please note this is a profession accredited, non-award course. Full details will be made available soon.

Depending on your goals, there may be other options as well. Our Education Manager can assist you. We will be setting up on-on-one meetings, but in the meantime you can reach Amanda at [email protected] or on +61 2 9267 9155 (Mon to Thur).

You may be able to complete the GradCertIA by undertaking a Fast-track version of module 1 in June and July and if successful entering module 2 in August.

Alternatively, you can switch to the professional certificate. Please note this is a profession accredited, non-award course and full details will be made available soon.

Depending on your goals, there may be other options as well. Our Education Manager can assist you. We will be setting up on-on-one meetings, but in the meantime you can reach Amanda at [email protected] or on +61 2 9267 9155 (Mon to Thur).

Depending on your goals, there may be multiple ways to achieve your desired outcome.

In terms of the GradCertIA you may be studying it for professional standing, on the job know-how and/or because you seek an academic qualification.

You may be able to achieve your desired outcomes by:

  • Completing the GradCertIIA within the teach out period
  • Transferring to another IIA-Australia learning program or micro-credential
  • Transferring to the new IIA-Australia Professional Certificate and receiving credit for modules already undertaken (to be released soon)
  • Credit transfer to another program (under development)
  • Articulation pathways to other institutions (under development)

The important thing is that you get the learning outcome you need.

The final date by which all students must complete the program is 18 December, 2026. No extensions will be available beyond this date, so timely progression is essential.

If you fail a module assessment, you may be able to take a supplementary assessment within the same semester to remain on track. If you fail both assessments, your ability to reattempt the module will depend on the remaining timeframe of the teach out. It is critical to discuss your situation with the Education Coordinator immediately to assess whether a retake is possible and to explore alternatives.

If unexpected circumstances arise, please contact us as early as possible. While extensions beyond the final completion date are not available, we will do our best to support you with alternative options.

We will be having one-on-one meetings with all students to discuss their options and potential pathways to achieve their goals.

Taking a break may impact your ability to complete the program before it closes. And unfortunately, you will not be able to extend

If you're considering a leave of absence or a reduced study load, please contact our Education Manager at [email protected] or on +61 2 9267 9155 (Mon to Thur).

The IIA-Australia team are available to assist. One-on-one consultations will be arranged with each student to review customised study plans and discuss available options.

In addition, students continue to have full access to academic, administrative, and student support services for the duration of the teach out. Please refer P8 Student Support and Wellbeing.

If you have questions, please contact our Education Manager at [email protected] or on +61 2 9267 9155 (Mon to Thur).

During your one-on-one consultation, you will have the opportunity to explore alternative qualifications or pathways that may be appropriate for your academic goals and previous study. In some cases, credit transfer or recognition of prior learning may apply. This may be with IIA-Australia or with another provider.

Credit transfer may be possible, depending on the receiving institution’s policies.

Most Australian universities will consider previous study at other providers on an individual basis. As part of their assessment, they will consider the relevance to the course you are applying for. Unfortunately, in Australia there are no universities offering internal audit qualifications – there are several overseas that are recognised by IIA Global as Centres of Excellence.

If you are considering this option, we recommend contacting potential providers directly and discussing your academic record and credit options with Student Services of each provider.

IIIA-Australia can assist with the provision of academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and liaison with receiving institutions to support recognition of prior learning (RPL) and credit transfer.

If you choose, you can use the GradCertIA modules you have completed toward the, soon to be released, IIA-Australia Professional Certificate. Please contact our Education Manager at [email protected] or on +61 2 9267 9155 (Mon to Thur) if you'd like to know more.

Yes, your academic results will be accessible through IIA-Australia.

You will receive regular updates about key dates, enrolment requirements, and support services via email. Any important changes or reminders will be communicated proactively.

Unfortunately, not. As part of this process, we cannot enrol new students to start after Semester 1 2025.   However, in place of the GradCertIA, IIA-Australia will soon be releasing details of our new Professional Certificate. Standalone units will count toward this new profession-supported qualification.  If you have questions, please contact our Education Manager at [email protected] or on +61 2 9267 9155 (Mon to Thur).

We understand and respect your decision if you choose not to continue with the GradCert. For regulatory compliance, you should officially withdraw from the course. To withdraw, please contact our Education Manager at [email protected] or on +61 2 9267 9155 (Mon to Thur).

Please note: If you choose to withdraw, you will not be able to re-enter the program later.
