International Women’s Day Panel: Collaboration and Leading for Best Practice

Join our panel of women in senior leadership positions in internal audit: Nina Harvey, Meryl Clarke, and Susan Ryan, as the Department of Defence hosts the March IIA Canberra Chapter Member meeting coinciding with International Woman’s Day.

The session will focus on leading for best practice, particularly the importance of collaboration. Nina, Meryl, and Susan will speak about their experiences in leading and conducting audits and the career opportunities available for women in this field.


The panel will be led by Nina Harvey, the Assistant Secretary Audit with the Department of Defence. Nina has been with Defence for almost 30 years. In 2018, she moved to the Australian Public Service from the Royal Australian Air Force, where she had worked primarily as a lawyer, but also developed a passion for managing programs, projects and reform.
She holds a BA and a Bachelor of Laws from the ANU, a Master of Laws from the University of Nottingham (UK), a Master of Environmental Law from the University of Sydney and a Master of Dispute Resolution from the University of Technology – Sydney. She also holds a Certificate IV in Workplace and Business Coaching.
Immediately prior to commencing as the Assistant Secretary Audit, Nina spent six years in the statutorily independent Ministerial appointment of Registrar of Military Justice, responsible for the convening and administration of court martial and Defence Force magistrate trials. Nina continues to serve in the Royal Australian Air Force as a reserve legal officer, holding the rank of Group Captain.

Meryl Clarke is a member of the Department of Defence and is the Assistant Secretary of Corporate Services in the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG). She holds a Master of Professional Accounting.
Since joining Defence in 2002 Meryl has had extensive experience in financial management, fraud control, cost analysis, audit and assurance and reform programs. In her current role Meryl provides corporate services for CASG including: Workforce Planning and Professionalisation; Governance; Risk; Work Health and Safety; Committee Support; Quality Management; Fraud; Security; Business Continuity and Ministerial Support.

Susan Ryan is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors.
She has spent most of the last 20 years consulting with a range of public and private sector organisations on establishing leading practice governance, risk and controls. 
Susan was the first female Managing Director for Protiviti Australia and has held leadership positions in large consulting firms, including internal audit and risk advisory services at EY. She served as a Senior Executive Service Band 1 officer at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and has worked internationally with major companies including the Walt Disney Company and the Olympic Delivery Authority.
