New Learning Pathways for Future of IA, Risk & Assurance

Vision 2035 Foreshadows Role Evolution for Internal Audit and GRC Profession.

IIA-Australia Responds with New Learning Pathways Strategy – Fundamentals to Certification

2024 global research [1] forecasts a significant shift from internal audit as an isolated function to an integrated Three Lines assurance. In the future, internal auditors may head whole of risk and assurance functions; and they will have dynamic professional career journeys across control assurance, risk management and internal audit; and, as a profession, they will be future-insight driven strategic advisors to their organisations.

While it is a bright future for the profession, based on IIA-Australia’s extensive engagement with members, we know that today’s learning pathways are not built to meet the needs of tomorrow’s professionals.

IIA-Australia has responded to the changing market needs with its new Learning Pathways Strategy. At its core, the new Strategy utilises IIA-Australia’s comprehensive Competency Framework and maps through to career outcomes creating both linear and non-linear learning pathways that adapt and remain relevant.

The new Strategy responds to the identified need for a profession-aligned program, that is adaptive to the rapidly evolving market and redirects regulatory investment towards innovation and strategic capability development for superior outcomes – flexible, agile and always relevant for basic, intermediate and advanced skill levels.

To achieve this vision the Learning Pathways Strategy will replace the Graduate Certificate in Internal Auditing (GradCertIA) with a Professional Certificate that offers electives in areas such as risk and assurance, technology assurance, integrated assurance and leadership, as well as equipping people to complete desired certifications.

The new non-award program will offer a more flexible and scalable learning model that is better aligned to the Institute of Internal Auditors–Australia’s Competency Framework. The intention is to leverage existing intellectual property and emulate the online delivery model of its very successful non-award Fundamentals of Internal Auditing to offer learning that enhances accessibility, respond to market demands, and aligns with the requirements for professional practice.

Details of the new Professional Certificate will be available soon.

Modules completed in the GradCertIA will be recognised prior learning under the new Professional Certificate.

At its meeting on Thursday 15 May 2025 the Board of Directors resolved to place the Graduate Certificate in Internal Auditing (CRS1200553) into teach out and to cease operations as a registered Institute of Higher Education. As required under Section 29(1) of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) Act 2011 (Cth), TEQSA has been advised of these two material changes to IIA-Australia’s higher education operations and, accordingly, IIA-Australia is no longer accepting enrolments for the GradCertIA.

All graduates of the GradCertIA will retain their award which will continue to be recognised as a valid higher education qualification.

As there are students currently enrolled in the GradCertIA, it is IIA-Australia’s priority to support them in achieving their desired learning outcomes, and part of this includes making remaining modules available to them in what is termed a ‘teach out period. IIA-Australia has written to all students and is working on tailored programs to assist.
