Professional Pathways

IIA-Australia is committed to promoting best practice wherever internal auditing is undertaken. An essential part of this is building the knowledge, skills and credentials of internal auditors. To support internal auditors as they progress throughout their career we have developed both the Internal Auditor Competency Framework and the Professional Pathways Program.

For every step of the way, we provide the right training and qualifications to enable you to develop and maintain a successful professional career.

Are you a student looking to get into internal auditing?

Unlike external auditing, the scope of internal audit is much broader than the financial accounts and as such internal audit departments recruit from a broad field of education and experience. Internal Auditors may have previous qualifications in business, economics, accounting, information systems, engineering, human resources, environmental science as well as law and the arts.

For those seeking a career as a Professional Internal Auditor, a three year Bachelor degree or equivalent is highly recommended as the first step. Graduates of a Bachelor degree can be expected to have ‘well developed cognitive, technical and communication skills to select and apply methods and technologies to: analyse and evaluate information to complete a range of activities; analyse, generate and transmit solutions to unpredictable and sometimes complex problems; and transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to others.’(Source: Australian Qualifications Framework, 2010). All a solid base for a successful career in internal audit.

Are you an Internal Auditor looking to qualify?

When you take on your first role as an internal auditor, it’s very important that you start building the knowledge, skills and credentials that will help you build a successful career.

For some, especially those who have very limited knowledge about internal auditing or for those in very busy teams, you have the option to enrol in some fundamental courses to bring you up to speed as a productive member of the internal audit team in a very short time frame. Our two basic courses, ‘Fundamentals of Internal Auditing’ and ‘Report Writing for Internal Auditors’ will ensure you are guided by the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF, The Standards) from the earliest point in your career.

Others will want to jump straight into the Graduate Certificate of Internal Auditing (GradCertIA). The GradCertIA is a postgraduate professional education program for those seeking a career in internal audit. It is an academically rigorous qualification, fully accredited by the higher education regulatory body in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework. Upon completion of the program you will have achieved an internal auditing qualification of the highest standard and be eligible to apply for professional membership of the Institute of Internal Auditors – Australia.

Are you qualified with a CMIIA®?

Once you have been admitted as a professional member, you still need to keep growing and developing to ensure successful career growth. Continuing Professional Education (CPE) is essential to ensure that professionals stay on top of their technical abilities and continually improve their knowledge and skills in broad-based business areas.

IIA-Australia offers a wealth of relevant, practical and informative programs for professional members. You may choose to attend a mix of full day workshops, shorter informative webinars without having to leave your desk, conferences and masterclasses. You will have the opportunity to attend members meetings in most capital cities where guest speakers will give a short technical presentation generally combined with an opportunity to network with your colleagues over a drink, breakfast or lunch.

Professional members are encouraged to further their credentials by pursuing an IIA-Global certification . The CIA® remains the globally accepted professional credential for individuals whose primary responsibilities are focused on internal auditing. Whether it’s the CIA® or one of the specialist certifications, the IIA’s Global Certification Program can build on your career and enhance job opportunities.
