Your Competitive Advantage

The commencement of new legislative requirements for NSW Councils relating to audit committees, internal audit and risk management is drawing closer. The new requirements are substantial and starting early with a staged approach is highly recommended, which is why getting a head start on preparations is essential to a smooth transition.

Delivered online, this one-day workshop covers every component of the new requirements in detail, with practical tips and further reference material.

You will leave the training with a complete practical guide on what you need to do and how to go about it. Beyond the specifics, you will also understand the rationale and expectations for ARICs.

The workshop has content relevant to:

·         Councillors, either as delegates on ARICs or in relation to their overall governance role

·         Independent Members, current and prospective

·         Council executives

·         Council officers in roles relating to internal audit, finance, governance, risk management, compliance, corporate planning, quality, performance improvement, corporate reporting

·         Council officers providing support to ARICs

Presenter: Stephen Horne GAICD, FGIA, CIA, CRMA, CGAP

Stephen has already trained over 120 Council staff and Councillors right across NSW on the new requirements and has unparalleled practical experience with Council Audit Risk and Improvement Committees (ARICs). Stephen is an independent member of 10 NSW Council ARICs and is the Chair for 5 of these. He also serves on audit committees for a Victorian Council and 4 NSW Government agencies.

Stephen was a previous CEO of the NSWG Internal Audit Bureau and the NSW Assistant Auditor-General for performance auditing (now being undertaken across NSW Councils).

He is a qualified Company Director, Company Secretary and Internal Auditor. He was also a recent President of IIA Australia, Australia’s delegate on the IIA Global Board, Chair of the IIA’s Global Public Sector Guidance Committee and recently co-authored an Australian 2020 best practice publication on “Effective Internal Auditing in the Public Sector”.
