Good governance is absolutely critical to the effective
and efficient operation of organisations. Recent examples in Australia and
overseas have shown the impact of poor governance on the continued success of
organisations and the ultimate demise of some CEOs, Directors and
organisations.
There has been a long standing debate around internal audit’s
role in auditing and recommending governance structures, but with increased
recognition on the importance of an effective control culture and the
tone-at-the-top, internal audit will find itself getting more involved in
assessing the effectiveness and appropriateness of governance frameworks. This
role is supported through the IPPF which requires internal auditors to evaluate
and contribute to the improvement of governance processes in a systematic and
disciplined manner.
This course will investigate internal audit’s role in improving
organisational governance and assessing governance structures.
Key topics to be
covered:
• Internal Audit’s responsibilities under Standards 2100 and 2110 of the
IPPF
• Determining who is responsible for what
• What happens
when things go wrong
• How internal audit delivers value in
organisational governance
• Picking win-win governance audit
topics
• Traps for the
unwary
This course will be highly interactive, and participants are encouraged to
bring along examples of governance audits they have undertaken, or lessons
learned in improving organisational governance.
Outcomes
• Understanding internal audit’s responsibilities
in relation to governance under the IPPF
• Understanding how to incorporate governance audits
as part of the Annual Audit Plan
• Identifying
models and frameworks for evaluating good governance
